A topic assignment is one of the most common parts of an APA course. It is also one of the most misunderstood. When your professor assigns a topic, they want a short overview and a detailed methodology or research of what you have done or will be doing for their course. Usually, the assignment allows them to only approve your outline or suggest any required changes before you start writing. This can be very vague and leave your readers with no direction or understanding of your work. This article describes some guidelines that will help you make sure your topic assignment complies with APA standards and adds value to your teaching.
First, to be properly reviewed, an APA research proposal must meet the requirements of each chapter it is divided into. Each chapter should have a reasonable amount of research material it includes, including sources, an introduction, discussion, analysis, data, and conclusion. The writing process for each chapter should provide clear communication of these requirements.
Second, make sure your topic is appropriate for the class level. If the class is in the history department, your proposal might be an examination of American government or constitutional history. If the class is on religion and ethics, your research paper could be on church-state separation or the problems of faith-based forgiveness programs. Your topic should be appropriate for the level of class, it was assigned in the first place. If your topic is too advanced for the class, it doesn't matter how thorough your outline was-it will not be approved.
Third, do your best to explain your research objectives in terms of your field. Don't just list the goals you wish to achieve; explain how you plan to achieve them. You must provide enough detail to show why your research proposal is worthy of consideration and why it differs from all other research papers in the same category. Even if you can't pinpoint a particular area of your field where your paper is unique, identify one or two similarities. For instance, most research proposals on a topic will focus on an aspect of that area that is becoming more important as technology advances. Other similarities might be the focus on a specific sub-field, the comparison of one type of technology to another, or the comparison of different types of studies to one another.
Fourth, give detailed attention to your references and their relevance to your project. Your references should include at least three professional writers who are familiar with your topic. These writers should not only understand your research paper but also your writing style. APA's research proposal outline requires you to provide at least one writer who understands your paper. Even if your writing is flawless, if your references are incompetent or unprofessional you won't get much attention.
Fifth, develop a solid plan and follow through. Writing a research proposal usually takes time, effort, and organization. The plan you develop should have an objective, a mission, a target audience, a strategy, and steps to take to achieve your goal. The plan should be well organized, easy to read and provide a logical sequence of events. Professional writers will often use a research question and answer session to address issues that arise during the development of a proposal.
Sixth, be prepared to do a literature review. One of the major goals of an APA research paper is to generate an original research paper. During your outline process, it is important to gather relevant literature reviews, which can serve as a tool for developing your outline.
Finally, practice what others have done before you. Before you start your outline or rewrite the existing outline that came from another source, take a look at the work of other professional writers who have written successful research proposals. Look for themes, techniques, or models that they have used to create successful research question and answer pages. You can also learn about effective research methodology by reviewing the websites of the AOA or Association of Teachers of Psychology.
